It is repugnant to see movies that are intelligent but are out of theatres within days. The number of underrated movies in Tamil cinema has reduced nowadays. The Best example is Aruvi. If it had released 5 years ago, it would have been in this list of underrated Tamil movies.
Cinema is basically a portrayal of people sense living at the time. Even the world’s most popular superhero movies released 30 years back would be a dumb-ass now. Similarly, a classic movie released 20 years back would be magnificent. But then it’s all about the content that matches the people mind. Nevertheless judging the movie, we list some of the intellectually made Tamil movies that received subservient recognition when they were originally released.
Here is the list of most underrated Tamil movies
Pudhupettai is definitely a cult movie in the history of Tamil cinema. We people forgot to celebrate this epic movie. This could have been a major hit than even gangs of Wasseypur movie series which is greatly celebrated in Bollywood.
The story should be the real hero of a movie and not the actual heroes. The script that deserved the respect lost it because of the cast of heroes who didn’t make it convincing enough for the regional audience.
Suriya and Vikram being the initial choices for the lead roles was the last hope.
Bala’s heart touching epic is Paradesi movie which deals about a tribe back during independence time, their culture, their way of life, their loss, their sacrifices, their religious
beliefs and lot more. This movie lost the race with commercial movies.
A bold psychotic movie dealing about an addict who was forced to be brought up in a weird and unusual environment gained a lot of critics but failed to receive the appreciations which the movie deserved for the awareness it created. Being an underrated tamil movie, Nadunisi Naaygal is also among the list of experimental tamil movies.
Director: Gautham Menon
Kamal Haasan’s Uttama Villain is a writer’s dream project. Deals with two parallel stories linked to a third hidden story. A movie within a movie, within a movie, is a lot like tamil cinema’s Inception. But the inability of the audience to connect to it made the movie to come in this list.
Director: Ramesh Aravind

Mysskin’s best movie till date should be this one. The way the story was narrated makes it his best. The lack of commercial elements in the movie missed the audience’ attention! Yet another underrated Tamil Movie.
Tamil cinema’s first movie without a song. Now-a-days people are ready to welcome those kind of movies. But 23 years back when Ilayaraja and AR Rahman were ruling it was tough for people to digest this heavy movie.
Director: P. C. Sreeram
The movie that is being celebrated now was judged bad initially by even the movie reviewers who felt the movie is beyond boundaries. People should have left the romanticism of history behind and enjoy this first archeological mythologically connected Tamil film.

Isac Asimov’s books are read and believed but we fail to accept a fellow Tamilian’s parallel
universe concept in Irandaam Ulagam. Marvel and DC science fictions are appreciated,
ironically same people couldn’t accept another science fiction Irandam Ulagam just because
they couldn’t relate it to reality.
A movie is taken ahead of times. Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan got together for this epic movie it should have been. Covers pre-independence times, Hindu-Muslim war, Gandhi related issues, religious disbelief and lot more were too much to digest in a single movie for the commercial audience
Director: Kamal Haasan
